During our summer travels, my wife and I attended several churches of Christ. What we observed in one congregation regarding their attitude towards worship was quite “eye-opening”. We hope and pray it will not become a prevailing attitude and practice in all congregations of the Lord’s people. We observed that several of the members chewed gum during the worship service. The individual who lead the opening prayer was chewing gum. When the Lord’s Supper was observed, we noticed that the men serving were chewing gum. Even the announcer and song leader were observed chewing gum! My questions are these: 1) Aren’t we as Christians demeaning and degrading our worship to the Lord by the “common act” of chewing gum? 2) What does this practice tell our visitors that attend our services? 3) Doesn’t our Lord who died on the cross for our sins deserve more honor and respect? I believe it demonstrates a lackadaisical and indifferent attitude toward the worship of our heavenly Father (Mt 15:8; Is 29:13; Ez 33:31). We should think before we stick a wad of gum in our mouths as we assemble to worship our heavenly Father, the Creator of the universe and all life (Jb 12:10; Ps 33:6-9; Is 42:5; Ac 17:24-25). In Rev 5:11-14; 7:9-12;	11:15-17; 19:1-7, John pictures for us the worshippers of our heavenly Father. In Rev 5:13 the scripture says, “And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto him that sits upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.” Notice, there is no mention of any worshipper gum-chewing in this passage or in any of the other passages mentioned. Brethren, if we can’t refrain from this “common” (and seemingly growing) practice for at least three hours a week maybe we should re-examine our attitudes toward our worship (2 Cor 13:5) in order to give proper praise, honor, glory and respect to our heavenly Father from whom all blessings flow (Ps 89:7; Jam 1:17).                    http://preachersfiles.com/gum-chewing-worshippers/ Places to hold your gum include in a job interview, at choir practice, and during a business presentation-- even if you're not actually speaking but just part of the presenting team. And the same goes for being in front of people for any situation.
