Let all things above in heav’n rejoice, and let all things below on earth be glad.  With all the might and strength of His arm, and eternal deed the Lord did perform, beneath His feet He has trampled down death by death, and first born of the dead has He become.  From the womb of Hades has He delivered us and to all the world has granted His great redeeming mercy.               (DLH, p. 83)

The Pool of Bethesda was located on the eastern side of the city near the Fortress of Antonia. The name Bethesda means "house of mercy." The water source was a nearby spring. Josephus refers to it as the Pool of the Sheep-market.

The Bethesda Pool was excavated in the late 19th century, but it has taken more than 100 years for archaeologists to accurately identify and interpret its complex site. It appears to have been a mikveh, or Jewish ritual bath. Most scholars had dismissed as an unhistorical literary creation the reference to 5 porticos, which suggests an unusual five-sided pool. Yet the site revealed a rectangular pool with
two basins separated by a wall—thus a five-sided pool—and each side had a portico. The archaeological evidence shows that the southern basin had broad steps with landings, indicating that it was indeed a mikveh. The northern basin provided a reservoir, or otzer, to continually replenish and repurify the mikveh with fresh water flowing south through the dam between them. In 2005, the Siloam Pool was also discovered, and was quickly identified as the mikveh, where Jesus healed the blind man. Jerusalem’s pilgrims would flock to these public mikva’ot to purify themselves, and, at times, to seek healing.
