The
Sea of Galilee [Mt. 4:18;
15:29]
is mentioned in the Bible under three other names. In the Old Testament, it
is called the “sea of Chinnereth” [Num. 34:11; Josh. 12:3; 13:27], a possible
reference to its harp-like, oval shape. The “lake of Gennesaret” once by Luke
[5:1], after the
flat district lying on its west coast. John [6:1; 21:1] calls it
the “sea of Tiberias”. The modern Jews call it “Lake Kinneret”; the modern
Arabs retain this name, Bahr Tabariyeh.
It is 12.5 miles long, and from 4 to 7.5 broad, covering 64 sq. miles, nearly
the size of Washington, DC. Its surface is 682 feet below the sea level of
the Mediterranean. Its depth is from 80 to 150 feet. It is 27 miles east of
the Mediterranean, and about 60 miles northeast of Jerusalem. It originated
as a volcanic basin, through which the Jordan River afterwards ran, keeping
its waters always fresh. The great variety and abundance of the fish in it
attracted to its once secluded shores a larger and more varied population
than existed elsewhere in Israel. This
large population, derived from all nations and countries, attracted the Lord
Jesus, and induced him to make this spot the center of His public ministry.
Capernaum, Jesus’s “own city” [Mt 9:1], stood on its shores. From among
the fishermen who plied their calling on its
|
waters,
He chose Peter and his brother Andrew, and James and John, to be disciples,
and sent them forth to be “fishers of men” [Mt 4:18,22; Mk 1:16-20; Lk
5:1-11].
He stilled its tempest, saying to the storm that swept over it Peace, be still [Mt 8:23-27;
Mk 7:31-35];
and here also He showed Himself after His resurrection to His disciples [Jn 21]. The Sea of
Galilee is indeed the cradle of the Gospel. http://www.christiananswers.net/dictionary/galileeseaof.html
The
Sea of Galilee is modern Israel’s largest freshwater lake, fed partly by
underground springs related to the Jordan sector of the Great Rift Valley,
but most of its water comes from the Jordan River, which enters from the
north. The river’s winding course drains out at the south end of the lake. The
largest modern city on its shores is Tiberias, named for the Roman Emperor
Tiberius (42 BC-37 AD). War, earthquakes, and even a flood in 1934 have
resulted in heavy damage to the town, but it is now Israel’s most popular
holiday destination. Ruins of the famous biblical town of Capernaum,
re-discovered in 1838 by the American explorer Edward Robinson, lie just
north of Tiberias on the northwestern shore of the lake. Excavations have
revealed a synagogue from the 4th or 5th c., making it
one of the oldest in the world. http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=40147
