Since they possessed Your power, they defeated the tyrants, dashing the demons' powerless displays of defiance. O Christ God, at their fervent entreaties, save our souls.                                                    (FSD) APOLYTIKION of St George – Tone 4 As the one renowned for setting captives free and for defending those in poverty, the physician of the sick and the champion of emperors, great and victorious Martyr George, intercede with Christ our God, beseeching Him to save our souls.                                                                       (FSD) APOLYTIKION of our Church (Holy Trinity) – Tone 8 O Blessed are you, O Christ our God, who by sending down the Holy Spirit upon them, made the fishermen wise and through them illumined the world.  And unto you, the universe was ever drawn, all glory to you, O God. (DLH, p. 115)                                                                                                       APOLYTIKION of our Church (St. Nicholas) – Tone 4(DLH, p. 110) As a yardstick of faith and an icon of gentleness; as a teacher of temperance, your actual deeds have declared you as being among your flock.  In this manner you gained by humility, things most sublime, and through poverty earned true wealth.  Father and our hierarch St. Nicholas intercede with Christ our God that our souls may be saved.                                                                                                        KONTAKION – Tone 2 A protection of us Christians unshamable, intercession before our Creator unwavering.  Please, reject not, the earnest cries of those who have transgressed; but, come to us for you are good, your loving help offer to us, who in faith cry out to you: Hasten to intercede, and speed now to supplicate, as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you. To understand Jesus’ attitude towards earthly riches, we must be cleansed of the great heresy of legalism.  That was one of the errors of the Pharisees, who were preoccupied with the Law, human and divine. In contrast, Christianity is concerned with being, not with doing; the Gospel affirms the primacy of the experience of life as personal relationship.  Jesus preached freedom not from but over earthly possessions and cares. The issue is one of ownership: do I own my possessions or do they own me?	Am I their master, or am I their slave?  I already have a Master and Father and Teacher: God, the abundant provider [Lk 12:22-32].  To have a second master, father, or teacher is incompatible with the Faith.  Possessions are things to be owned; personified and raised to the status of an other-in-relationship, they become Mammon, a merciless second master [Lk 16:13]. Mammon is the Aramaic-Phoenician word for possessions or property, regarded by the ancient Church as an idol of demonic character.        A.M. IOANNIDES (2001)
