EISODIKON –Tone 2
Come,
let us worship and fall down before Christ. Save us, O Son of God, Who are
risen from the dead; who sing to You. Alleluia.
APOLYTIKION resurrectional of the tone of the
day – Tone 5
Coeternal with the
Father and the Spirit is the Word, who of a virgin was begotten for our
salvation. As the faithful we both
praise and worship Him, for in the flesh did He consent to ascend upon the
Cross, and death did He endure, and He raised unto life the dead through His
all glorious resurrection.

O Blessed are you, O Christ our God, who by
sending down the Holy Spirit upon them, made the fishermen wise and through
them illumined the world. And unto

of our Church (St. Nicholas)–Tone 4
(DLH, p. 110)
As a yardstick of faith and an icon of
gentleness; as a teacher of temperance, your actual deeds have declared you
as being among your flock. In this
manner you gained by humility, things most sublime, and through poverty
earned true wealth. Father and our
hierarch St. Nicholas intercede with Christ our God that our souls may be
saved.
KONTAKION of the
Entry of the Theotokos – Tone 4
The
most pure temple of our Lord and our Savior, the very precious chamber of His
and virgin, the sacred treasure-chest of the glory of God: enters on this
very day in the House of the Lord, ushering with her the grace in the
all-holy Spirit. She whom all God’s
angels laud and praise, for she is truly, the heav’nly tabernacle.

To
heed Jesus’ message concerning earthly
riches is to live it out in practical action that affirms unconditional, sacrificial
love, relationship and community. This is perhaps the reason why our age almost
unanimously admires revolutionaries like Mother Theresa, Mahatma Gandhi and
Albert Schweitzer. They demonstrate that “it is not how a man ranks on the
achievement scale of the divine commandments or in the acquisition of wealth
that is the essential question, but the intensity of his commitment to the
work of preparing for the Kingdom of God [Mk 10:17-31]” (H.C.KEE, et al., 1973). To overcome poverty, Christ assumed
poverty, and called His disciples to practice the same ascesis. For “what is not
assumed, cannot be healed,” wrote St Athanasius. This work can best be accomplished in the
Church’s “sacrificial self-transcendence and struggle to
|
attain
communion. It provides a basis for social justice that is genuine and not
merely rationalistic; it liberates work from slavery to need, transforming it
into a personal relationship and it brings out each human being’s creative
distinctiveness” (C.YANNARAS,
1984). “Our
greatest and only resource is the miracle of human creativity in a relation
of openness to the divine,” writes George Gilder (1981), who concludes with
the following poem, ascribed to Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971): “Nothing worth
doing is completed / in one lifetime. / Therefore we must be saved by hope. /
Nothing true or beautiful makes / complete sense / in any context of history.
/ Therefore we must be saved by faith. / Nothing we do, no matter how
virtuous, / can be accomplished alone. / Therefore, we are saved by love.”
