The holy Martyr Theodore greatly rejoiced as he stood in the fountain of fire as if beside the still waters. He was consumed by fire and offered like sweet bread to the Trinity. At his entreaties, O Christ God, save our souls.                                                 (FSD) APOLYTIKION of our Church (Holy Trinity) – Tone 8 O Blessed are you, O Christ our God, who by sending down the Holy Spirit upon them, made the fishermen wise and through them illumined the world.  And unto you, the universe was ever drawn, all glory to you, O God.   (DLH, p. 115) APOLYTIKION of our Church (St. Nicholas) – Tone 4    (DLH, p. 110) As a yardstick of faith and an icon of gentleness; as a teacher of temperance, your actual deeds have declared you as being among your flock.  In this manner you gained by humility, things most sublime, and through poverty earned true wealth.  Father and our hierarch St. Nicholas intercede with Christ our God that our souls may be saved. KONTAKION – Tone 2 A protection of us Christians unshamable, intercession before our Creator unwavering.  Please, reject not, the earnest cries of those who have transgressed; but, come to us for you are good, your loving help offer to us, who in faith cry out to you: Hasten to intercede, and speed now to supplicate, as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you. The Holy Martyr Theodore of Tyre (or the New-Recruit) was a soldier in the city of Amasea of Pontus (on the Black Sea coast of Asia Minor), under the command of a certain Brincus. Ordered to offer sacrifice to idols, St. Theodore firmly and in a loud voice confessed his faith in Christ the Savior. The commander gave him several days to think it over, during which time St. Theodore prayed intensely. They charged him with setting afire a pagan temple and threw him into prison for death by starvation. The Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him there, comforting and encouraging him. Brought again before the governor, St. Theodore  once more boldly and fearlessly confessed his faith, for which he was subjected to new torments and condemned to burning. Without hesitation, he climbed onto the bonfire and with prayer and laudation gave up his holy soul to God. This occurred in about the year 306 under the Roman emperor Gallerius (305-311). Unharmed by the fire, the body of St. Theodore was buried in the city of Euchaita, not far from Amasea. His relics were afterwards transferred to Constantinople, to a church dedicated to his name: it stands today as Vefa Kilise Mosque, a few hundred meters south of the grander Süleymaniye Mosque.	The saint’s head is situated in Italy, in the city of Gaeta (half-way between Rome and Naples). Later on, 50 years after the martyr's death of Saint Theodore, the Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363), wanting to commit an outrage upon the Christians, ordered the city-commander of Constantinople during the first week of Great Lent to sprinkle all the food provisions in the market-places with the blood of idol-sacrifices. St. Theodore appeared in a dream to archbishop Eudoxios and ordered him to inform all Christians that no one should buy anything at the market-places, but rather all should eat cooked wheat with honey (koliva). In memory of this occurrence the Orthodox Church annually makes celebration of the holy Great Martyr Theodore of Tyre on Saturday of the first week of Great Lent. On the eve of that Saturday, on Friday, in the Divine Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts, after the ambo prayer, the canon is read to the holy Great Martyr Theodore, compiled by the monk John Damascene. After this, koliva are blessed and distributed to the faithful. This celebration on Saturday of the first week of Great Lent was set by the Patriarch of Constantinople Nektarios (381-397).                                                    Prologue from Ochrid; Translated by Fr S.
