Ἀντίφωνον α´ – Ἦχος β´ 1 Εὐλόγει ἡ ψυχή μου, τὸν Κύριον, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐντός μου τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ. 2 Εὐλόγει ἡ ψυχή μου, τὸν Κύριον, καὶ μὴ ἐπιλανθάνου πάσας τὰς ἀνταποδόσεις αὐτοῦ. 3 Κύριος ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ἡτοίμασε τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ πάντων δεσπόζει.     Ταῖς πρεσβείαις τῆς Θεοτόκου, Σῶτερ, σῶσον ἡμᾶς. Little is known about the prophet Joad. In the Synaxarion, he is said to be from Samaria, but 3 Kings13:1 states he was from Judaea. In fact, 2 Chronicles 9:29 gives his name as Joel, but this should not be confused with the second of the 12 minor prophets and author of the OT book bearing this name. Joad denounced King Joroboam’s construction and worship of golden heffers.  Jeroboam attempted to lay his hand on Joad, but it was withered immediately.  He begged Joad to heal him, which was accomplished at the prophet’s prayer.  On his return to Jerusalem, Joad encountered a	false prophet named Embe, who enticed him to eat bread with him, thereby breaking the command of God to expedite his mission and not partake of food or drink while on it.  Subsequently, a lion attacked and killed Joad, and his body was buried by the very same Embe who had tricked him.  The Synaxarion includes these verses: “A lion defeats you, O prophet of the Lord, as someone who transgressed the word of the Lord.” Joad had prophesied that “Behold in the House of Judah, Josiah [=Jesus] will be born, who shall sacrifice on the altar the priests of the idols” [3 Kings13:2].
