Lord has made known His salvation before all the nations. Save us, O Son of
God, Who are risen from the dead; who sing to You. Alleluia. [Psalm 97:2]

O Lord by Your
sacred Cross You abolished death, and granted unto the thief blessed
paradise. The myrrh- bearers ceased
lamenting and turned to joy. The

hierarch St. Nicholas intercede with Christ our God that our souls may be
saved.

The womb of a virgin you did hallow at your birth, and as it
befitted you blessed elder Symeon’s arms.
You also reached out and saved us all, O Christ our God. Now, bring peace to our nation tangled in a
war, and make firm our leaders whom you dearly love, for you are the only
lover of man.

According
to information provided by Robert F. Taft (2000), use of the Communion Hymn “The cup of salvation shall I taste…” is first
encountered in extant sources in the 9th c. Typikon of the Great Church [Codex Patmos 266], in which it is
associated with “Marian feasts, remembrances of natural disasters and
salvation from invasion, Saturday of Akathist, Ascension*, Palm Sunday*, and
Annunciation*.” In the 10th
|
c.,
it was also chanted on “the Indiction (Sept. 1)*”, while in the 11th
c. it was added to “Saturday of Lazarus*.” In contemporary practice, it is used on
Wednesdays, but not on the starred feasts, above. On Hypapante, whose rubrics suggest it is a Dominical rather than a
Marian feast, an alternative Koinonikon
was suggested in the 19th c., namely the Eisodikon [Ps
97:2],
as is also done on Palm Sunday.
