Translation of Relics of St. John Chrysostom (†407)

Ἀντίφωνον α´ – Ἦχος β´ 1 Εὐλόγει ἡ ψυχή μου τὸν Κύριον, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐντός μου τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ. 2 Εὐλόγει ἡ ψυχή μου τὸν Κύριον, καὶ μὴ ἐπιλανθάνου πάσας τὰς ἀνταποδόσεις αὐτοῦ. 3 Κύριος ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ἡτοίμασε τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ πάντων δεσπόζει.     Ταῖς πρεσβείαις τῆς Θεοτόκου, Σῶτερ, σῶσον ἡμᾶς.   Ἀντίφωνον β´ – Ἦχος ὁ αὐτός 1 Αἴνει ἡ ψυχή μου τὸν Κύριον, αἰνέσω Κύριον ἐν τῇ ζωῇ μου, ψαλῶ τῷ Θεῷ μου ἕως ὑπάρχω. 2 Μακάριος οὗ ὁ Θεὸς Ἰακὼβ βοηθὸς αὐτοῦ, ἡ ἐλπὶς αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ Κύριον τὸν Θεὸν αὐτοῦ. 3 Βασιλεύσει Κύριος εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, ὁ Θεός σου, Σιών, εἰς γενεὰν καὶ γενεάν.     Σῶσον ἡμᾶς, Υἱὲ Θεοῦ, ὁ ἀναστὰς ἐκ νεκρῶν, ψάλλοντάς σοι· Ἀλληλούϊα. Ἀλλὰ σοῖς λόγοις παιδεύων, Πάτερ Ἰωάννη Χρυσόστομε, πρέσβευε τῷ Λόγῳ Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ, σωθῆναι τὰς ψυχὰς ἡμῶν. Intercede with Christ God, the Word himself, entreating Him to save our souls. APOLYTIKION of our Church (Holy Trinity) – Tone 8 O Blessed are you, O Christ our God, who by sending down the Holy Spirit upon them, made the fishermen wise and through them illumined the world.  And unto you, the universe was ever drawn, all glory to you, O God. (DLH, p. 115) APOLYTIKION of our Church (St. Nicholas) – Tone 4    (DLH, p. 110) As a yardstick of faith and an icon of gentleness; as a teacher of temperance, your actual deeds have declared you as being among your flock.  In this manner you gained by humility, things most sublime, and through poverty earned true wealth.  Father and our hierarch St. Nicholas intercede with Christ our God that our souls may be saved. KONTAKION of the feast of Hypapante – Tone 1 The womb of a virgin you did hallow at your birth, and as it befitted you blessed elder Symeon’s arms.  You also reached out and saved us all, O Christ our God.  Now, bring peace to our nation tangled in a war, and make firm our leaders whom you dearly love, for you are the only lover of man. St. John Chrysostom, a great ecumenical teacher and hierarch, died in the town of Comana (nr. Samsun in N. Turkey) in the year 407 on his way to a place of exile, having been condemned by the intrigues of the empress Eudoxia because of his daring denunciation of the vices ruling over Constantinople. The transfer of his venerable relics was made in the year 438, during the reign of Eudoxia's son emperor Theodosius II.  Chrysostom had the warm love and deep respect of the people, and grief over his untimely death lived on in their hearts. His student St. Proclus, Patriarch of Constantinople (434-447), preached a sermon glorifying St. John saying: "O John! Thy life was filled with difficulties, but thy death was glorious, and thy grave is blessed and reward abundant". Those who were present in church, began to entreat that the relics of St. John might be transferred to Constantinople. The emperor gave	his consent and ordered the transfer of the relics of St. John, humbly beseeching of him forgiveness for himself and for his mother Eudoxia. The reliquary coffin with the relics was placed in the Church of the holy Martyr Irene. The Patriarch opened the coffin: the body of Saint John had remained without decay. The emperor approached the coffin with tears, and asked forgiveness. All day and night people did not leave the coffin. In the morning the reliquary coffin with its relics was brought to the Church of the Holy Apostles. The people cried out: "Receive back thy throne, father!" Then Patriarch Proclus and the clergy standing at the relics, saw Saint John open his mouth and pronounce: "Peace be to all". In the 9th c., the feastday in honor of the transfer of the relics of St. John Chrysostom was written into church singing.                                       Prologue from Ochrid; Translated by Fr S.
