During the week of Cheesefare, we abstain from meat, and partake of cheese, eggs, and fish.
Onesimus in his youth was a servant of Philemon, a Christian of distinguished lineage, living in the city of Colossae, Phrygia. Guilty of an offense against his master and fearing punishment, Onesimus fled to Rome, but as a runaway slave he wound up in prison. There he encountered the Apostle Paul, was enlightened by him, and was baptized. Thereafter, Onesimus served the Apostle Paul like a son. St Paul was personally acquainted with Philemon, and wrote him a letter filled with love, asking him to forgive the runaway slave and to accept him like a brother. It is one of the most emotional compositions which exist in Holy Scripture. "I urge you on behalf of my child Onesimus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment. Perhaps this is why he was away from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a brother, beloved especially to me" [Philemon 1:10,15,16]. Paul sent Onesimus with this letter to his master, depriving himself of help, of which he was very much in need. Upon receiving the letter, Philemon not only forgave Onesimus, but also sent him	back to Rome to the apostle. St Philemon was afterwards consecrated bishop of the city of Gaza. After the death of the Apostle Paul, Onesimus served the apostles until their end, and he was made a bishop. After the death of the holy apostles, he preached the Gospel in many lands and cities: in Spain, Carpetania, Colossae, Patras. In his old age, Onesimus occupied the bishop’s throne at Ephesus, after the Apostle Timothy. When they took St Ignatius the God-Bearer (Dec. 20) to Rome for execution, Bishop Onesimus came to meet with him with other Christians, as St Ignatius mentions in his Epistle to the Ephesians. During the reign of the emperor Trajan (89-117), Onesimus was arrested and brought to trial before the eparch Tertillus. The latter held the saint in prison for eighteen days, and then sent him to prison in the city of Puteoli. After a certain while, the eparch sent for the prisoner and, convincing himself that St Onesimus maintained his faith in Christ, had him stoned, after which they beheaded the saint with a sword. A certain illustrious woman took the body of the martyr and placed it in a silver coffin. This took place in the year 109.    OCA.org

SATURDAY of Apokreos (Saturday of the Souls)
Theodore was from Euchaita of Galatia (N. central Turkey) and dwelt in Heraclea of Pontus. He was a renowned commander in the military, and the report came to the Emperor Licinius that he was a Christian and abominated the idols. Licinius, therefore, sent certain men to him from Nicomedia, to honor him and ask him to appear before him. Through them, however, Theodore sent back a message that it was necessary for various reasons, that Licinius come to Heraclea. Licinius, seeing in this a hope of turning Theodore away from Christ did as was asked of him. When the Emperor came to Heraclea, Theodore met him with honor, and the Emperor in turn gave Theodore his hand, believing that through him he would be able to draw the Christians to the worship of his idols. Seated upon his throne in the midst of the people, he publicly bade Theodore offer sacrifice to the gods. But Theodore asked that the emperor entrust him with the most venerable of his gods, those of gold and silver, that he might take them home and himself attend upon them that evening, promising that the following day he would honor them in public. The Emperor, filled with joy at these tidings, gave command that Theodore's request be fulfilled. When the	Saint had taken the idols home, he broke them in pieces and distributed the gold and silver to the poor by night. The next day a centurion named Maxentius told Licinius that he had seen a pauper pass by carrying the head of Artemis. Theodore, far from repenting of this, confessed Christ boldly. Licinius, in an uncontainable fury, had Theodore flogged, with six hundred lashes on his back and five hundred on his stomach. After this, the Saint was raised on a cross, was completely pierced with lances, and was left on the cross to die. The next day Licinius sent men to take his corpse and cast it into the sea; but they found the Saint alive and perfectly whole. Through this, many believed in Christ. Seeing his own men turning to Christ, and the city in an uproar, Licinius had Theodore beheaded, on February 8, 319, at three o’clock in the afternoon. During the entire time of his tortures, St. Theodore said repeatedly: “Glory to Thee, my God, glory to Thee!” St. Theodore is considered the protector of soldiers who call upon him for assistance.
